Henry Thornton - Contributors: A discussion of economic, social and political issues Graeme Mills
Graeme, B.A. LLB brings a love of history, a keen interest in current affairs and a passion for China.

After a career in Sydney in property - sales, finance and development - Graeme Mills returned to his home town on the far north coast of NSW.

He taught music for a few years, the Monty Python phase of his life...... ‘and now for something completely different.’ Music teaching was “challenging and very rewarding”. However, Mills decided to relent, release the little children and check if his brain still worked by completing a law degree. This led to a new career as a writer.

Graeme's latest passion is China.

Mei (AKA Xiaosui, B.Fin,) came to Australia in 2008. She brings her lifelong experience of China and her unique experiences growing up in China. She was born in 1966, during the Cultural Revolution, and grew up as the dragon stirred to take its place in the world.

Mei is the daughter of a 'hei jia' 'black family' - the father was accused of being a counter-revolutionary as his family had moved to Hong Kong after 1949 - she spent most of the Cultural Revolution on a prison farm. She has seen the worst and the best of China. She also brings a love of teaching, a love of history and culture, which she first learned at her father's knee, and a love of life. She is passionately committed to and loves her country. She sees the cultural revolution in perspective both personally and historically.

Together, Mei and Graeme bring an Eastern and Western perspective to that great topic, China. Their aim is to present a broader and more positive view of China than usually seen in the west.

The China Mei and Graeme want to bring you is described as: 'Images of vibrant colour. Warm smiles of welcome; rich architecture; children bubbling with excitement.'

Graeme Mills, I admire your forensic ability and I think you have outlined a great idea.
The UN is probably too useless to try this, but at least they have the idea to consider

Graeme – a thoughtful and well-argued thesis. I think many of us in the west are worried that although these mongrels clearly have to be stopped, nobody really knows how to do it. Congratulations on putting forward an approach that may treat the cause and the disease and is actually proactive. Perhaps if, after defeating the Taliban in Afghanistan, the allied nations poured money into the country and built schools, hospitals and roads there might not have been such fertile ground on which to breed the next generation(s) of terrorists. As you quite rightly point out, an educated democracy rarely gets it wrong and an educated Afghanistan might well have had a fighting chance of sorting some of its own issues out and been a very nice “branding” exercise for western democracy. Now however, we’re in Iraq making a meal of things and now we are there, we MUST win.

I just worry about what that will cost and whether your idea of a UN forum can have a chance with all the water under the bridge. It certainly would do the UN some good though. After the oil-for-food business, after which I am still amazed Kofi Annan has kept out of prison, let alone kept his job, I fear it is an organisation sadly lacking in credibility. There must also be a solution to the Palestine issue – a promised land promised to too many – which galvanizes so many against the west.

Great article there Graeme!

To add to the suggestion that a certain cult of Muslims are possibly the ones trying to make a point, the most recent UK bomb blast also proves that they want their voices raised and heard by the world. An act that is so brutal just to get the attention from world leaders for what reason? We say that we are listening, but are they saying anything in response? Random suicide bombers on a bus or plane hijackers crashing into the World Towers do not express the terrorists’ reasons for their doings but instead it rages the anger from the West which is now bestowed upon the Muslim community.

While innocent passengers wait for a train only to be greeted by nail bombs or innocent civilians captured in Iraq only to be beheaded for reasons to remove the troops from Iraq. Such atrocious acts just to remove the West out of the Middle East? What happens after the west leaves? Will we find the nuclear missiles that were the origin for this war to keep the world safe? Will there be worse disasters then what we already fear? While these questions and many more remain unanswered simply because no one is speaking nor confirming that we will be safe, we thus live our lives in terror. A life that keeps both ours and our family’s heart pacing each time we hear of a terrorist’s act.

We are embroiled in something that we have no escape from, whether our leaders lead or not.

It is a battle for hearts and minds, at least as significant and subliminal as brand advertising for fast food (sorry to trivialise a serious moment).

Responding to Graeme's 4-question straightjacket:

1. Who is the enemy: it is the usual minority - maddies who want to jerk the world around
2. Where are they: everywhere - as usual
3. Why are they attacking us: naive question, as they are attacking everyone, not just us and our kin
4. What do they want: world domination and destruction, achieved through conversion of moderates (be they christians muslims economists housewives whatever) into fundamentalists, followed by a world war

Which leads to a fifth question: how are they going?

Seems to me the answer is "Not badly, so far. Got "most of us" involved. They won't win, but winning was always too much of an ask. But they will cause merry hell while they have a go."

I am sorry, I really cannot understand this naive and bizarre love affair with the United Nations. As someone who has had the misfortune to work along side the organisation in two asian countries for long periods of time, I believe it safe to say the UN is a bloated, incompetent organisation that time and time again does more harm than good. Governed by Political Correctness, its policies are not practical nor sustainable with positions within the organisation are chosen on the basis on politics and region rather than ability.

To refresh our memories

East Timor is failed state today after the United Nations:
1. Encouraged the people to vote then fled (with some notable and incredibly brave UN personnel ignoring the UN call to run) when the predicable happened and mass violence broke out.

2. Undid all the good work and beginnings of good governance and legal frame work set up in the first 12 months after the slaughters and long before the UN deemed it was safe too drink coffee there again.

Or perhaps we should re-cap the UN performance in Rwanda...Bosnia....

Whilst it is fairy tale stuff to believe the UN could do anything about terrorism, it might be a great idea to remove UN HQ and place it along the disputed Israel and Palestine territories that way neither group would have the need to carry arms...or would they. At least it would keep them from meddling and screwing up the rest of the world further.

We need to first look back into history a little bit to see if it is possible that our own history of first world terrorism against the third world could possibly have any bearing on todays situation. We have sent our mining and oil companies and western corporations out into the third world to rape and pillage, we have fought wars and killed millions for the sake of "isms", we have steadfastly refused to accept any responsibility for our own actions, we consume voraciously and waste in a day enough to feed the third world for a year and then wonder why we are so hated. We have bought this on ourselves and deserve everything we get. The answers? 1/ We must change before we can expect anyone else to.2/ Feed and educate the world. 3/Stop telling ourselves lies.

It's not the UN, but The Oz reports that "radical Islamic political party Hizb ut-Tahrir has asked for a seat at the table when muslim leaders meet John Howard at a summit announced yesterday to root out "closd cells" in Islamic communities in Australia". http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,16183752-2,00.html

Is this the start of Mr. Mills' process?

Why is it that the plane that flew into those buildings on 9/11 were crewed by Saudi Arabians and Eyptians yet the Americans invaded Afganistan and Iraq. The sources both human and financial that provided the orginal terrorists that the Americans are so mad at are still there.

If the world wishes to defeat the terrorist the lessons learnt from defeating the Japanese Red Army, the Red Brigade and the Baader-Meinhof Groups need to be reapplied.

Terrorism can be defeated it is just a matter of ensuring that the plan to defeat them does not recruit more for the cause. Martyrs breed maytyrs.

Eating Tassie spuds creates a 'win, win'
We certainly need pollution taxes (globally) to bring true costs closer to direct costs (ie costs which do not allow for environmental damage.)

There is not enough being written about the power China exerts over Australia. I remain shocked that China was able and allowed to hijack the Australian leg of the Olympic torch relay. It is a sign that all actions taken by China are much better organized than we realize.

Is China another Enron?
