Henry Thornton - Contributors: A discussion of economic, social and political issues Henry Thornton
Henry Thornton (1760-1815) was a banker, M.P., philanthropist, and a leading figure in the influential group of Evangelicals that was known as the Clapham set. His 'Enquiry into the Nature and Effects of the Paper Credit of Great Britain (1802)' is an amazing performance. "...it anticipates in some points the analytic developments of a century to come.

No other performance of the period will bear comparison with it, though several, among them Ricardo's, met with much greater success at the time as well as later... He was one of those men who see things clearly and who express with unassuming simplicity what they see."

Why does there have to be winners and losers in this very rich (by world standards) country. Debt to purchase a house is a personal decision so one must take the good with the bad. It is those in this society whose incomes are linked to CPI that have become increasingly dis-advantaged. CPI is the contstruct of economists who do not measure human happiness, much less human dignity. If CPI truly kept pace with the cost of living then those that are dis-advantaged due to factors outside their control would not suffer the indignity of hearing the PM tell them they are well off, when quite obviously, they are not.

So Henry, tell your pollie friends to re-calculate their incomes. Take 1970 as a base year and use the CPI to increase it till now. If CPI is a true measure then they should be well and truly satisfied with the result.

Bravo Henry

I suspect our institutions are undergoing a process of generational change - particularly in the tertiary sector - and real change may take a while. Australian academic rates and mechanisms of pay are also archaic, and will need a serious rethinking and jolt into the modern world if the generational change is to be a positive experience, allowing our institutions to attract and retain the best.

Of course no one is listening. If Man was able to listen we would not have our problems.
The three points by Skidelsky are excellent.

1. Imperialist Islam is the threat to international peace.
2.not enough money/jobs reaching the lower parts will create economic instability.
3.the moral underpinnings of capitalism will weaken without observable declines in poverty, local and international.

All these points must be tackled...by the leaders of business, because if the bell tolls, it will be for them.

You may well have been on the right track in mid-2002, Henry, but things look very different now. My bet is that John Howard will announce that he is staying on and that Peter Costello will announce either that he is having some time on the backbench or that he is quitting politics.

The CSIRO should be more commercially focussed but the more academic side of research should be conducted in the universities but thanks to the Dawkin's conversion of teachers colleges to Enid Blyton Uni's, that is not an option either. How sad it is that it is only now that we understand the folly of electing Gough and Bob.....

I am in total agreement with our esteemed Prime Minister - we have no practical choice but to support President Bush. I hope the UN does its job, but if it doesn't the US must.

Late last week I heard on the media that Iraq announced it would not observe the Geneva COnvention in respect of the US military - this seems to be now confirmed from the evidence on 24 March, but Iraq then announced it would observe the Geneva convention.

The ABC coverage was quite unbiassed tonight, subtlely assisting Saddam by shooting the Coalition's messengers, or supplying belittling "sound bites" such as the young soldier taking a Kodak "Happy Snap".

Perhaps such a sound bit should be officially designated as an Arblaster.

You are too optimistic, Henry. The French and the Germans will not support an invasion.
