Lion

Director: Garth Davis

Based on Saroo Brierley’s autobiography A Long Way Home

A movie that captures what it means to be ‘lost’ and how we learn through love.

Lion has been so well received I am sure many of Henry’s readers have already seen this heart-warming film. It is a beautiful recounting of an extraordinary story that traces how a young man who became lost from his mother and siblings as a tiny boy uses Google Earth at a far later stage of his life to find them again.

Lion is, however, far more than this. It is a story of the love of an adopting mother for her Indian by birth sons; the story of one boy growing to understand that his brother is psychologically ‘different’, and all the anger and grief this growing wisdom entails; and it is the story of parents who love so greatly they are willing to share their beloved child with his birth family - and vice versa. Yes, Lion is the story of the heroism of real love.

Sunny Pawar and Dev Patel as the child and young man ‘Saroo’, David Wenham and Nicole Kidman as the adopting Australian parents, and Priyanka Bose as Saroo’s Indian mother all bring this story to life.

Cuts to the real Saroo Brierley and both his mothers at the end of the movie Lion add icing to the cake.

Recommended.
